Mel TunneyConcert Producer and Vocal Arranger
Mel is an award-winning songwriter, vocalist, accomplished arranger, and worship leader. She began touring at 18 with the iconic contemporary Christian group, TRUTH. Her experience with Truth led to a career as a studio singer filled with background vocal sessions, choral projects as well as regional and national jingles. The “studio season” brought new relationships with fellow singers Bonnie Keen and Marty McCall. They founded the group, First Call, in 1983 and soon found themselves in demand as a studio group. That led to a tour with Sandi Patti, a record contract with WORD records, live performances on the Grammy Awards telecast and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson as well as opportunities to tour with Christian artists Amy Grant and Bebe and Cece Winans. Mel currently serves as the Worship Leader at The Church at Woodbine in Nashville, mentors young songwriters, and organizes and stages live productions through the church calendar year. She (Mimi) and Dick have two daughters and seven grandchildren.
Roger is a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and just last year, The University of Mobile named its school of music- The Roger Breland School of Music in his honor! The naming reflects the impact Roger has had on the growth and development of the Christian university’s school of music, which he joined in 2002 as artist-in-residence, becoming executive dean in 2003 and later vice president. Under Roger’s influence, the university’s music program embraced both classical and contemporary Christian training, added academic majors, created 22 performing ensembles to provide students with practical hands-on experience, presented concerts worldwide, and established the Christmas Spectacular concert attended by over 8,000 annually and broadcast internationally. During his tenure, the university founded 8Eighty Records recording label, built a professional recording studio on campus, and created the School of Worship Leadership. The university’s already well-respected school of music grew from 45 music majors, with 60 in choir and four vocal or instrumental ensembles, to 227 students who major or minor in music and perform in at least one of 22 ensembles. “Dr. Breland’s emphasis on excellence is at the heart of the music program he envisioned and was instrumental in building at the University of Mobile,” said UMobile President Dr. Mark Foley, who originally tapped Roger to lead the program. “For more than four decades, Roger Breland has been a mentor to young Christian musicians,” Foley said, pointing to Roger’s 31-year career as founder and director of TRUTH, one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording and performing groups. Roger was instrumental in launching the careers of Christian musicians and former members of TRUTH such as Steve Green, Alicia, 4Him, Avalon and Russ Lee. TRUTH traveled 3 million miles, performed 10,000 concerts in 26 countries, made 60 albums, and involved 400 musical artists, many of whom are now popular Christian recording artists. The Gospel Music Association inducted Roger and TRUTH into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Roger is a consultant for Concert of the Ages, and five members of UniVoice are previous students of his.
